Safety Standard for Mechanical and Physical Properties

The latest version of this part of the ISO 8124 standard is ISO 8124-1:2009 updated in 2009. The requirements of this part apply to all toys, that is, any product or material designed or clearly indicated for use in play by children under 14 years of age.

This part stipulates the acceptable judgment criteria (basis) for the structural characteristics of toys, such as sharpness, size, shape, clearances (e.g., sound, small parts, sharp points and sharp edges, hinge clearances), as well as the acceptable judgment criteria for the special properties of certain types of toys (e.g., the maximum kinetic energy of non-elastic projectiles at the ends, the minimum angle of certain riding toys).

This part specifies the requirements and test methods for toys of different age groups from birth to 14 years old.

This part also requires that appropriate warnings and instructions for use be marked on certain toys or their packaging. Due to the differences in languages among countries, the text of these warnings and instructions is not specified, but the general requirements are given in Appendix C.

This part does not indicate that it covers or includes the potential hazards of various special toys or toy categories that have been considered.

Example 1: A typical example of a sharp point hazard is the pointed tip of a needle. The hazard of a needle has been recognized by the purchasers of toy sewing kits, and the hazard of a functional sharp point is informed to the users through normal educational methods, and a warning sign is marked on the product packaging at the same time.

Example 2: Toy syringes also have recognized hazards related to their use (e.g., instability during use, especially for beginners) and potential hazards of structural characteristics (sharp edges, pinching hazards, etc.). According to the requirements of this part of the ISO 8124 standard, these hazards should be minimized.
