Testing Requirements

1. The EU was the first region to pay attention to the migration of primary aromatic amines in food - contact materials. Since 2002, the European Commission has continuously issued or revised relevant regulations to strengthen the management of the migration of primary aromatic amines in food - contact materials. In the 2002/72/EC Plastics Directive, the European Commission stipulated that the migration limit of prohibited PAAs in food - contact materials should be non - detectable (with a detection limit of 0.02 mg/kg).

2. In 2007, the EU issued Directive 2007/9/EC amending 2002/72/EC, reducing the detection limit of prohibited PAAs migration to 0.01 mg/kg.

3. The newly revised Plastics Regulation EU 10/2011 in 2011 further improved the relevant requirements. It stipulates that except for substances approved by the regulation, the amount of primary aromatic amines migrating from plastic materials and articles into food or food simulants should be non - detectable, with a detection limit of 0.01 mg/kg (in food or food simulants).

The BFR recommends reducing the EU - specified compliance limit for primary aromatic amines in food - contact materials (detection limit) of 0.01 mg/kg to 0.002 mg/kg (detection limit) to keep the level of primary aromatic amines in food - contact materials as low as possible.
