Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as one of the main sources of air pollution, pose significant hazards to human health.

On July 3, 2018, the State Council of the People's Republic of China released the "Three - Year Action Plan for Winning the Blue Sky Defense War" to accelerate the improvement of ambient air quality, aiming to reduce the total VOCs emissions by more than 10% in 2020 compared to 2015. On June 24, 2020, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China released the "2020 Volatile Organic Compounds Governance Tackling Plan". That is, since July 1, 2020, the production, sales, and use of ship coatings and floor coatings should meet the requirements of the newly issued and implemented national product harmful substance limit standards. At the same time, it urges production enterprises to make preparations in advance for the implementation of harmful substance limit standards for inks, adhesives, cleaning agents, and wood, vehicle, building exterior wall, and industrial protective coatings. Enterprises should complete the transition in an orderly manner before the standards officially come into effect, and areas with conditions can implement them in advance according to the needs of ambient air quality improvement.
