What requirements do food contact materials and products entering the US market need to meet?

According to the US Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FFDCA), food packaging materials fall within the scope of food additive management and are uniformly managed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The relevant requirements are listed in Volume 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Specifically, they must meet the requirements of 21 CFR 170-189.
