Service Background

In European countries, the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is also known as the Safety Data Sheet (SDS). The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) uses the term SDS. However, the United States, Canada, Australia, and many Asian countries use the term MSDS. MSDS is a comprehensive legal document provided by chemical production or sales enterprises to customers as required by law, containing information about the characteristics of chemicals. It provides sixteen items of information, including the physical and chemical parameters of the chemical, its flammability and explosion properties, health hazards, safe use and storage methods, leak disposal measures, first aid measures, and relevant laws and regulations. MSDS can be prepared by the manufacturer in accordance with relevant rules. However, to ensure the accuracy and standardization of the report, it is advisable to apply to a professional institution for its preparation.

Definition:

The MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), also known as the Chemical Safety Technical Specification, can also be translated as the Chemical Safety Specification or Chemical Safety Data Sheet. It is a document used by chemical manufacturers and importers to illustrate the physical and chemical properties of chemicals (such as pH value, flash point, flammability, reactivity, etc.) and the potential hazards to the health of users (such as carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, etc.).

Differences between SDS and MSDS:

Both the European Union and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) use the term SDS. However, in the United States, Canada, Australia, and many Asian countries, the SDS (Safety Data Sheet) can also be used as an MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet), and the functions of the two technical documents are basically the same.
In China, the standard GBT16483-2000 before 2008 referred to it as CSDS. In the revised standard GBT16483-2008 "Content and Item Sequence of Chemical Safety Technical Specification" in 2008, it was unified with the International Organization for Standardization and abbreviated as SDS.
The two abbreviations, SDS and MSDS, play exactly the same role in the supply chain, with only some minor differences in content.

Some people think that only hazardous chemicals require an MSDS, but this is not the case. Currently, foreign countries have strict requirements for MSDS (SDS) reports, which have been extended to almost all chemicals, and even some plastic, metal, and textile products.
